This
week’s game review will be of…
******************************************SMALL SPOILERS***************************************
The Wolf
Among Us is a game developed by Telltale Games, the same company that released
The Walking Dead. It is a story-based point-and-click game which tells the
story of the main character, Bigby, who is the sheriff of a town called Fabletown,
which is inhabited by familiar characters such as Snow White, Beauty, Beast and
many more, all of which are interconnected within the game’s story.
The game is unique as every
decision the player makes playing as Bigby will result in different
consequences. In other words, the story plays out according to the decisions
the player makes. For example, if the player replies rudely to a character
within the story, and if this character reappears in the later parts of the
game, he/she will have a rude reaction towards the player.

Various decisions the player can choose which result in different reactions. |
This varied character behavior
that is influenced by the player and thus varying story adds some replayability value to this
game.
The Wolf Among Us consists
of five episodes, and at present, only the first episode is available, while
the other four will be released periodically till Summer 2014.
Having played the first
episode twice over so far, here’s what I think about the game…
The
things that’ll make you go “WOOOOO!”
Compelling
story
Of course,
any story-based game will have a very good story to go along with it. However,
The Wolf Among Us pulls this off extremely well as compared to other games.
When I
was playing through the game’s first episode for the first time, I felt that
the game was paced well and Telltale did a good job introducing the vast amount
of characters in the story, and this was what made me feel almost emotionally
attached to all the characters (sympathetic towards the good guys, and
completely hateful towards the bad guys).

Guess who's good and bad |
After I’ve
finished playing the first episode, I felt that feeling of grief and sadness
(if you wanna find out why, get the game or YouTube! xD), and this feeling was
not something I usually experience strongly in other games that have a story,
and this feeling was what got me psyched immediately for the next episode (THAT
ISN’T OUT YET *ROCKS IN CHAIR*).
In
summary: great story. If you’re the kind of gamer who loves a good story, look
no further.
Smooth
controls, animations and navigation
It’s
just that good that I made one specific point talking about it.
The game
moves very fluidly, the characters move convincingly, the (small spoiler alert)
fighting scenes play out smoothly, all these small little things is what
contributes to the overall storytelling of the game, and is definitely
something that helps makes the story convincing in a sense.

Moral
choices
The
story only flows when the player himself/herself makes the decisions.
Oftentimes these decisions can be very hard to make, not to mention impactful, and
this is made even harder by the game allowing only a specific amount of time
for the player to make that decision, but it’s just like real-life right?

Things
that make you go “BOOOO!”
Nothing (that’s a first!).
OVERALL
Gameplay:
A+, compelling story, fluid controls and navigation, what’s not to like?
Graphics:
B, simplistic graphics made better through polish and refinement
Depth:
C, the story runs straight no matter what. It is linear at times.
Animation:
B+, characters move rather realistically despite the simplistic graphics.
Replayability:
B+, worth replaying to see what’ll happen if you make a different decision from
the previous playthrough.
Learnability:
A++, EVERYONE HAS MORALS AND DECISION MAKING SKILLS!
Overall:
A-, the story is really what makes this game. Add together the
pleasing-to-the-eye graphics and smooth controls, and this is what makes the
game extremely fun to play.
Summary
At
24.99USD on Steam, this game is definitely worth the price if you are the kind
of player who loves story-driven games, with 4 more episodes yet to come out,
even I am clueless of what’s to come, but it will definitely be worth the wait!
